To say that the Colorado Avalanche’s undefeated 5-0 start is surprising would be an understatement. It’s probably the most unexpected start of this young season. Most experts, including yours truly, thought that the Avalanche were due for a rebuilding year, but so far they’ve looked like a formidable team.
The biggest reason for this success? Semyon Varlamov. He has been stellar in all four of his starts, including making 40 saves against the Washington Capitals and their high power offense on October 12th.
He has been nearly flawless this year, only letting in one goal in each game he’s played so far. His 1.00 goals against and .970 save percentage are both 2nd in the league (1st when you consider that Ben Scrivens has only started one game).
If the Avalanche are going to continue to destroy expectations, Varlamov will have to maintain his stellar play, but for now let’s just marvel at his start to the season.
